## Why the skin under an apron belly gets a rash

The skin under an apron belly is a warm, closed fold where sweat can’t evaporate. That’s the setup for intertrigo, an inflammatory rash of skin folds driven by “warm temperatures, friction, moisture, maceration, and poor ventilation”. A tummy liner’s job is to take the moisture and the skin-on-skin contact out of that list.

StatPearls defines intertrigo as a superficial inflammatory condition of flexural skin, such as the armpits, abdominal folds and groin. In a damp fold, “Candida species thrive in heated, high-moisture conditions”, which makes yeast a common cause of secondary infection.

It’s a recognized problem with a hanging fold. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons lists “uncontrolled intertrigo, infections, and skin necrosis” among the symptoms excess skin can cause. Cleveland Clinic notes that skin folds “can also increase your risk of skin infections, skin fungus and skin rashes”.
