## How compression garments differ from shapewear

Shapewear smooths your outline under clothes, usually in stretchy fabric you pull on. Compression garments are firmer and built to hold tissue in place, and the post-surgical ones open with zippers or hooks so you can dress without pulling them over a sore belly. With an apron belly, that easy closure matters as much as the firmness.

In practice there’s a spectrum:

What compression won’t do is change the fold. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says excess skin folds are “virtually impossible to correct by diet, weight loss, or exercise”. A Reddit user in r/loseit said it simply: a compression garment “won’t make the skin reduce”.

## Which compression garment type fits your apron belly

Choose by grade and closure. For grades 1–3, a boned extra-firm girdle or a full-torso faja holds the fold. For grade 3–4 folds or bodies above 5XL, a zip-front long-leg shaper avoids dragging a firm waistband over the fold. Past grade 4, or above about 60 in, a tall binder or support band fits where garments don’t.

## Compression after a panniculectomy or tummy tuck

Follow your surgeon. Binders are routinely used after abdominoplasty, but the evidence on why conflicts. StatPearls says compression garments should be worn after panniculectomy to prevent seroma. A 2020 surgical review says binders haven’t been shown to reduce seroma, though many patients find the support comfortable.

Seroma, a pocket of fluid under the skin, is “the single most common complication of panniculectomy”, according to StatPearls. The two sources that matter here disagree on whether compression prevents it:

So the honest answer: binders are routine after surgery, and the benefit may be more about comfort and support than about preventing fluid. Your surgeon decides the garment, how tight, and for how long. Some practical points to raise with them:

- **Closure.** A side or front zipper (Marena LGS, Rago 6210, Salomé 217) or a hook-and-loop binder is easier with drains and a sore belly than a step-in garment. StatPearls notes suction drains are placed under the flap after panniculectomy.
- **Sizing for a smaller body.** Your measurements change after the fold is removed. Ask whether to measure before surgery or wait for a post-op fitting, especially with garments that can’t be returned once opened.
- **Stages.** Colombian brands label garments “stage 1” and “stage 2”. Ask your surgeon which, if either, they want you in and when.

## How to size a compression garment with an apron belly

Measure your waist, hips around the widest part of the fold, and upper thigh in inches, then use the brand’s own chart. Don’t size down for more compression, and go up between sizes. Post-op garments are often final sale once opened, so check the chart twice and ask the retailer if you’re unsure.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is the best compression garment for an apron belly? +**

For everyday firm compression, our top research pick is the Rago 6107 Panty Girdle ($65): extra firm, a 6 in front bone and sizes to 8X. For full-torso compression you can adjust, the Fajas Salomé 217 ($130, to 5XL). After surgery, wear the garment your surgeon specifies.

**Do compression garments help after a panniculectomy? +**

Sources disagree. StatPearls says compression garments should be worn after panniculectomy to prevent seroma, while a 2020 surgical review says abdominal binders haven’t been shown to reduce seroma but many patients find them comfortable. Follow your own surgeon’s instructions.

**Is a compression garment the same as shapewear? +**

Not quite. Shapewear is built to smooth your shape under clothes. Compression garments are firmer and built to hold tissue in place, often with zippers or hooks so you can get them on after surgery. Firm girdles and fajas sit between the two.

**Can a compression garment get rid of an apron belly? +**

No. Compression holds the fold while you wear it. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says excess skin folds are “virtually impossible to correct by diet, weight loss, or exercise”, and only surgery removes the skin.

**Should I size down for more compression? +**

No. Use the brand’s inch chart and go up if you’re between sizes. Too-tight compression rolls, digs into the fold and is harder to put on. Post-op garments are often non-returnable once opened, so measure carefully.

**Are abdominal binders good for an apron belly? +**

A tall binder gives even, adjustable compression and fits much larger waists than most garments, to 90 in or more. It doesn’t lift the fold, and if it’s shorter than the fold its lower edge can roll under. Support bands with an under-belly pad lift instead.
